Alfred A Stroup 14th NC Infantry Regiment
Alfred A Stroup was a Resident of Cleveland County, North Carolina. Muster records show his occupation as being a Farmer. Records indicate that in 1860 Alfred was not living with his parents Joseph P. Stroup and Lucy Ann Faulkner, who had moved to Buncombe County, NC. He was working for Benjamin Briggs Iron works on Crowders Creek six miles south of Dallas, North Carolina.
At the age of 22, Alfred enlisted into Company D (Captain Edward Dixon's company Cleveland Blues) 4th Regiment NC Infantry, as a private on 26 April, 1861. The 4th Regiment NC Infantry was later renamed the 14th NC Infantry Regiment .
Private Stroup mustered into service at Garysburg NC on 10 June 1861. He was transferred to the Confederate Navy on 19 February 1862 and was assigned to the Confederate war steamer "CSS Virginia", which was previously known as the USS Merrimack.
Alfred A Stroup is my 4th great grandfather. He married Sarah Lowe and they had four children.
