Emanuel Rudisill Company M, 16th North Carolina Infantry

Emanuel Rudisill born Sep. 17, 1845 Lincoln County North Carolina, died Nov. 22, 1924. He was the Flag Bearer of Company M, 16th North Carolina Infantry, C.S.A. He became the third Regimental flag bearer during the Battle of the Wilderness. He survived the war and returned home to Gaston County, NC. Lieutenant Rudisill refused to surrender his Colours at Appomattox! Here in his own words he describes how he saved his unit's flag;" I didn’t turn in that precious flag at Appomattox. I got a substitute from one of the companies. The regimental battle flag was sewn inside the lining of my overcoat and brought through the Yankee lines to my commander, Col. William Stowe. Col. Stowe told me to keep the flag and preserve it for my descendants"
