My
1st cousin David Messer was born in Haywood County North Carolina in
1828. He is the son of George Messer and Nancy Caldwell. He married a
lady name Lucinda.
David Messer enlisted as a private in
Company C of the 62nd NC Infantry in Waynesville NC on July 14, 1862.
Private Messer was Captured at the Cumberland Gap in Tennessee on
September 9, 1863. He was Sent to Louisville, Kentucky and was later
Confined at Camp Douglas in Chicago Illinois on September 24, 1863.
Private David Messer died of dysentery at Camp Douglas on August 11,
1864. He was buried at Chicago City Cemetery in grave number 1264.
