Haywood County SCV memorial for Conard H Messer, Private Samuel Messer, Sr.'s brother.Conard was born in Haywood County, North Carolina. His parent's names are Frederick Messer and Ann Hunter.
Conrad enlisted at the age of 23 in the Confederate Army on 17 Aug, 1861 in Haywood County NC. He was a fifer in Company E of the 29th NC Regiment. His name is misspelled on his muster records, they have him listed as Coonrod Messer.
The following story of how Conrad died was passed down by family member's of Woodrow Wilson Feltner.
"During the Civil War, an army battalion was marching along Boone Trace, which runs through the farm. One young soldier was wounded and by the time he reached this point, he could go no further.
He was left at a house by the road with two sisters. (The identity of the two sisters is still unknown.) The soldier was left in their care, but died soon afterward. The sisters, knowing that another battalion of enemy soldiers was close at hand, and fearing retaliation from the opposition if they were caught, dug a shallow grave in a fence row and buried him, covering the grave over with leaves."
