This is the flag of the 23rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. It was captured at the battle of Gettysburg and is now part of the collection owned by the North Carolina Museum of History. George Shelton Dellinger was born in Lincoln County NC. He is the son of Andrew Dellinger and Mary Polly Shelton. He is my 3rd cousin 6x removed. (Dellinger, Flowers, Dean) George enlisted at the age of 27 on 22 June 1861. He was given the rank of Private and assigned to Co. K of the 23rd Regiment N. C. Troops. George was promoted to the rank of Corporal prior to 1 March 1862 and was later promoted to Sergeant on an unspecified date. Records list him as present or accounted for until wounded in the head and captured by the enemy at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 1 July 1863. Sergeant George Shelton Dellinger was hospitalized at Gettysburg where he died from a fractured skull on or about 14 July 1863. The location of his remains are unknown to me at this time.
