Private John Camp Company D of the 26th North Carolina Infantry

John Camp was born on 27, Dec, 1828 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. he is the son of Joseph Alexander Camp and Lucretia Taylor. He married Jane L Spray on 24, Apr,1856. She died in 1860.

John enlisted on 1, Oct, 1862 at Camp Holmes in Raleigh North Carolina. He was assigned to Company D of the 26th North Carolina Infantry. On July 1, 1863, the 26th North Carolina became engaged in the Battle of Gettysburg and was involved in the fighting at McPherson's Ridge.

 Private Camp was shot in the left leg with a Minnie Ball on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg. He was captured by the enemy on the 4th of July and taken to Point Lookout prison. John was paroled on April, 27, 1864. Private John Camp suffered from the effects of the wound for the remainder of his life.

John Married Sarah Randall in 1869. They had at least two children. Private John Camp passed away on 20, May, 1911 in Cleveland County North Carolina. He is buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Grover NC.

He is my 1st cousin 6x removed.
