Private Moses S Stroup

My 4th great grand uncle Moses S Stroup was born in Lincoln County NC during August of 1839. His parents were Joseph P. Stroup and Lucy Ann Faulkner. Moses married Letta Salina Biddix in 1866 and they had many children after the war.

Moses enlisted as a private in Company K of the 12th North Carolina Infantry Volunteers on 5 June 1861 in McDowell County NC . The 12th NC was later designated the 22nd North Carolina State Troops. Private Stroup was listed as a POW on 23 May 1864, he was captured near the North Anna River in Hanover County Virginia and was taken to Point Lookout POW camp. He was released on 14 May 1865.

Private Moses S Stroup died during the month February in 1914. he is buried at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery at Old Fort in McDowell County North Carolina.

Research conducted in 2010 and 2011 by Mike & Sid Stroup and Linda Ballard revealed that there were at least 75 soldiers carrying the Stroup surname who served in the Confederate Army. 20 of those 75 died while in service. All 75 are descendents of German native Jacob Stroup. Jacob is my 8th great grandfather.
