Flag of the 38th North Carolina Infantry
Rufus Stroup was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina during the year
of 1836. His parents were Jonas Stroup and Rebecca Cloninger. He was a
resident of Gaston County, North Carolina before the war.
Rufus was conscripted as a Private on 20 March 1863 in Wake County,
North Carolina. He was assigned to Company D of the 38th North Carolina
Infantry Regiment.
It was about daylight on 1 July 1863 that
the 38th North Carolina infantry encountered yankee Cavalry at
McPherson's Ridge near Gettysburg Pennsylvania. At some time during the
day's fighting, Private Rufus Stroup was wounded, he was later captured
by the enemy on the 4th of July . Private Stroup was taken as a POW and
was confined at at Fort McHenry MD. on 6 July 1863. On 12 July 1863,
Rufus was sent to Fort Delaware Hospital.
Private Rufus Stroup died in the hospital on 31 July 1863 and is buried at Finn's Point National Cemetery in New Jersey. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=2537879
