Private Israel Rufus Stroup

Israel Rufus Stroup was born on 18, Nov, 1827 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He is the son of John D. Stroup and Susannah Rudisill, he is a descendent of Jacob Straub/Stroup (1722) who immigrant from Germany and settled near the Alexis area of NC.

The 1850 United States Federal Census shows that Israel was a farmer and resided with his parents and brother Philip in Gaston County, North Carolina. Israel married Elizabeth S Rudisill on 4 Oct 1854.

When Israel Rufus Stroup was 35 years of age, he and his brother Philip enlisted as privates in the Confederate army on 4, July, 1862, in Lincolnton, NC. He was assigned to Company G of the 57th Regiment under the command of Captain Speck. Israel was captured by the enemy at the Rappahannock bridge in Virginia on 7,Nov, 1863 and was taken to Point Lookout POW camp on the 11th of Nov. He was paroled and exchanged on 30, OCT, 1864. He is listed as absent without leave for a period of time, However, Muster records show that he was captured for a second time at Farmville, Virginia on 6, April, 1865.

Private Israel Rufus Stroup died on 24 Aug 1907 in Gaston County, North Carolina. He is buried at Christ Luthern Church Cemetery in Stanley, NC.
