CAPTAIN BENJAMIN NEWTON

My 7th Great Grandfather was CAPTAIN BENJAMIN NEWTON son of Ebenezer Newton and Elizabeth Buchanan. Benjamin Newton first joined the Army When the British came to Charleston. Captain Newton enlisted to go on an expedition against the Cherokee Indians as a 1st lieutenant under Captain John Mattocks, William Chronicle was the Major, and Frederick Hambright(my 6th great grandfather) was his Colonel. Capt. Newton also spent one year in the service against Tories in Lincoln and Rutherford and the upper part of South Carolina – his group marched over to Green River in Rutherford where they met with 800 men under different colonels, their object was to engage British Colonel Patrick Ferguson. Captain Newton was not present at the Battle of King's mountain because he was sent as an express to General Rutherford who was at Coddle Creek, Mecklenburg NC. He next volunteered with others to join General Greene near Camden South Carolina

His group under the command of Colonel Graham went to Lincoln in pursuit of a Tory Colonel Moore, However, they arrived late at the battle of Ramsour's Mills in Lincolnton NC, Captain Newton shot at one of the Tories as he was running from the battle. Captain Newton was in an engagement against Col.Tarleton in the Haw fields in Orange County North Carolina and Captain Newton was also in a small engagement with the British at Polk's Mills under Captain John Clark,during this engagement Benjamin Newton was wounded in the thigh by a British ball

CAPTAIN BENJAMIN NEWTON is buried in Old Cloverhill Cemetery in Casar NC. The cemetery is in a pasture where some of the headstones were toppled by cows that roamed the land.
