Coleman D Helms Company A 48th Regiment North Carolina Troops

Coleman D Helms was born in 1823 in Anson county, North Carolina. He was the son of Isaac Haney Helms and Mary Polly Doster. Coleman was a farmer prior to the war. He mustered into service at the age of 39 on 19 April 1862 in Union county NC. He was assigned to Company A 48th Regiment North Carolina Troops.

Private Helms was wounded in the chest at the Battle of Sharpsburg ( the yankees called it Antietam) on 17 September 1862 and sent to Winchester Hospital. Muster Rolls for Jan-Feb show him present for duty with his unit.

Records show that he was wounded in the leg and foot on 13 December 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg while in service to Ransom's Division and was sent to Richmond Virginia.

Private Coleman D Helms name appears on the 48th Regiment Roll of Honour. He died from disease in Pocotaligo, South Carolina on 28 March 1863. His wife Teletha Helms(my 4th Great grandmother) was given a settlement of $42.26.
