Kings Mountain Battlefield Monument.
Today's Revolutionary War post is a relative on my Fathers side. Dean, Plemmons, Dellinger, Hambright.
My 5th great granduncle Captain John Hardin Hambright was born 17 March 1762 at a fort near the Catawba River in Tryon County/Lincoln County, North Carolina. His parents are Lt. Colonel Frederick Hambright and Sarah Hardin.
Captain Hambright rendered Patriotic service during the American Revolution in the Lincoln County Regiment of North Carolina.He fought alongside his father at the the Battle of Kings Mountain on 7 October 1780.
Captain Hambright later marched to join General Daniel Morgan at Cowpens. By the time that he had reached the Broad River at the Shallow Ford, he received news that General Morgan had defeated Colonel Banastre Tarleton. After General Morgan's victory at the Cowpens, Morgan retreated towards the Catawba River and British Commander Lord Cornwallis pursued. Captain Hambright and his company fell in the rear of Cornwallis's Army and followed him to the Yadkin River and took some prisoners.
After these actions, Captain Hambright was once again elected as Captain of the company of Light horse, and for the remainder of the war he kept the Tories from killing and robbing.
Captain Hambright married Nancy Black on 28 October 1784. It is said that he first met Nancy on the battlefield the day after the Battle of Kings Mountain. She lived in the vicinity and was caring for the wounded soldiers.
