Tonights Revolutionary war veteran is my 1st cousin 10x removed on my paternal side.(Cosby, Anderson, Snelson, Plemmons). John Cosby is listed by the daughters of the American Revolution as Ancestor #: A026318
John Cosby was born on December 16, 1737 in Hanover County, Virginia. He married Jemima Yancey and they had their first child in 1777. They had a total of ten children. During the American Revolution, he first served as a Private in the Tenth Regiment, Virginia militia under the command of General Nelson. Throughout the war, he served at least three more tours in the militia. One tour included guarding Hessian prisoners from Burgoyne’s army. He saw action at Mackey’s Mills, Brock’s Bridge, and Little York (Yorktown). Specifically, at the siege of Yorktown his militia company joined its regiment in Gloucester and commenced operations against the British just opposite to Little York.
He lived in Hanover, Louisa and Albemarle Counties, Virginia; and Barren County, Kentucky. He died in circa 1843 in Barren County, Kentucky at the age of 103. He is buried in the Cosby Family/Bishop Cemetery in Barren County, Kentucky." Lower Cape Fear Chapter National Society Sons of the American Revolution
