Messer

This Morning's Revolutionary War post is about relatives from my mom's side of the family (Parton, Messer).

On 16 May 1771, the Battle of Alamance took place in North Carolina. Regulators fought against Governor Tryon and his North Carolina militia. Some historians consider this battle to be the first battle of the American Revolution. The Regulators were defeated and 13 souls were taken as prisoners of war.

My 7th great grandfather Captain Robert Messer fought with the Regulators against Governor William Tryon and his militia. After the battle was lost, Captain Messer was captured and sentenced to death by hanging. Christian S Messer, the son of Captain Robert Messer, begged Governor Tryon to spare his father’s life.

On 19 June 1771, Captain Messer, Captain Benjamin Merrill, Captain James Pugh, Captain Robert Matear and two others were hanged by the British for treason.

A few years after his father's execution, Christian Sargent Messer rendered Patriotic service in the American Revolutionary War. The Daughters of the American Revolution have him listed as Ancestor #: A078368.
